In 2024 electric car sales remained strong, continuing the upward trend from 2023, a year where almost 14 million new EVs were registered globally. EV sales in 2024 could reach around 17 million, an increase of more than 20% compared to 2023.
In the UK new car market, electric vehicle sales have shown significant growth, reflecting the global trend.
What percentage of new cars are electric? The percentage of electric cars in the world has increased dramatically in recent years; they accounted for almost a fifth of all new car sales in 2024.
Highlighting the rapid growth of the EV market is that EV sales in 2024 were more than 6 times higher than in 2018.
In the opening month of 2025, EVs enjoyed continued strong sales even amongst an overall downturn in new car sales. In the UK, January 2025 saw a 2.5% YoY drop in car registrations – driven by declining petrol and diesel sales – while BEV registrations were up over 41%.
It’s the same story in Europe – BEV sales increased 37.3% while overall car sales dropped 2.1%.
